Sunglasses for Newborns: When Can Babies Start?
Can newborns wear sunglasses? Yes, and there's no minimum age. What changes in the first six months isn't whether sunglasses are allowed, it's how much of the work they should be doing.
This page covers the newborn and early-infant stage specifically. For the general question, see do babies need sunglasses. For buying criteria across all ages, see what to look for in infant sunglasses.
Can newborns wear sunglasses?
Yes. There's no minimum age for sunglasses, and from the very first outing UV protection is useful. The practical limit isn't safety, it's fit: a newborn can't hold sunglasses on by themselves, so anything without a strap will simply fall off.
When can babies start wearing sunglasses?
From day one outdoors, with one important caveat about the first few months.
For babies under about 6 months, the usual guidance is to keep them out of direct sun altogether. Shade, stroller canopies and lightweight clothing are the first line, and sunglasses are a supporting layer rather than the main one. UV still reaches you under cloud cover, so shade matters on overcast days too.
From around 6 months, as babies spend more time actively outdoors, sunglasses start doing more of the work. Many babies tolerate them well from about this point, especially if the habit started earlier.
Can a 3-month-old wear sunglasses?
Yes. At 3 months the priority is still shade first, but a lightweight strapped pair is perfectly appropriate for a walk or a stroller trip. Keep sessions short at this age and put them on just before you head outside, so they get associated with going out.
What newborn sunglasses need that older babies' don't
Choosing for a newborn is genuinely different from choosing for a toddler:
- A secure adjustable strap. Not optional at this age. An elastic headband that wraps snugly is the only thing that keeps a pair in place on a newborn.
- A featherlight frame. Newborns have small, delicate faces. The frame has to be light enough that it causes no pressure at all.
- Soft, flexible material. Rigid plastic can dig in. Soft silicone is the better choice against newborn skin.
- Correct sizing. An oversized pair falls off no matter how good the strap is. Look for frames sized for newborn faces rather than scaled-down adult shapes.
- BPA-free, non-toxic materials. Newborns mouth things. This one matters.
UV400 is the spec to insist on at every age, newborns included. What it means, and how to check a pair really has it, is covered in what UV400 protection means.
Getting a newborn to keep them on
The good news: newborns don't resist sunglasses the way older babies do, because they don't yet have the coordination to pull them off. The whole challenge is fit.
Baby Sunnies® baby sunglasses use a universal adjustable strap with a frame sized for small faces, so they stay put from the first wear. Put them on just before stepping outside, and start with short stroller walks before longer outings.
